CHAPTER 10

“Wait, what? They arrested Ruben? Ruben Wilkes?”

“I’m afraid so. Just made the arrest an hour ago.” Joy gently placed her fork next to her plate and took a drink of tea. The color had drained from her face, and she set her glass on the table with a shaky hand. “I…I don’t know what to say. I know you two were close. I’m sorry, Denny.”

My jaw was slack, and I felt nauseous. I didn’t know what to say, either. Though I had a dozen questions swirling in my mind, none would come to the forefront.

I cleared my throat. “But why?”

“Jordan said they found evidence that pointed straight at Ruben.”

“Evidence? What evidence?” My mind zeroed in on Ruben’s right hand, wrapped in gauze on the morning I had arrived to town. He had said he’d gotten the injury while sharpening knives, but something was off about the way he had said it. His averted gaze. Him sweating despite the cool morning breeze.

I wasn’t about to mention any of that. I just wanted to see what Joy would say next.

Joy hesitated. “A text message.” Her gaze fell as she said it. It was clear she wasn’t telling me everything.

“What did the text message say?” I asked.

She shook her head. “I’ve already said too much. Sorry, Denny, I can’t tell you.” Her eyes met mine. “I’ll get in so much trouble.”

“How can they arrest someone because of a message? How did they know it was from Ruben?”

She let out a short breath through her nose. “It was from his phone number.”

“So? Anyone could have sent that text from his phone,” I pointed out. “There’s even something called number cloaking, where the person sending the message wouldn’t even have to have access to Ruben’s phone. It would just look like it came from his phone.”

“How do you know this?”

I shrugged. “Saw it on a 60 Minutes special about scammers.”

“Well, regardless, Jordan and his team know what they’re doing. I’m sure they have other evidence I don’t know about.”

“What about the shard of glass; were there fingerprints on it?”

“I can’t talk about any of that.” She put her hands up in surrender. “Please, there’s nothing more I can tell you, Denny. I know you’re upset about your friend. It’s a shocking thing to learn that⁠—”

“You think he did it?” I asked, interrupting her. “You’ve known Ruben as long as I have. You know he’s kind and wouldn’t hurt anyone.”

“People change.” She looked away.

“You really do think he did it.” It was a statement, not a question.

She looked back at me. “I never said that,” she protested. “I hope my brother is wrong, I really do.”

“If your brother is wrong, then an innocent man is behind bars right now.”

“I said I hope my brother is wrong, not that he is wrong.”

I took another sip of my drink, more to keep myself from saying something I’d regret than to quench my thirst. Setting my glass back on the table, I said, “I’ll be right back. Nature calls.
